I saw this post in a local hotel owners group recently and I felt it a good read for our fellow guests and those of you looking to stay with us here in the jungles of Costa Rica. Here are Pacific Edge Eco Lodge, we are a unique hotel as we are open aired (screened in) cabins nestled into the jungle. On any given day you will see howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, toucans, parrots, sloths and ALL sorts of wild life including but not limited to stingless bees, beetles, spiders, cuter ants and geckos! Lots of Geckos! You might find these in your rooms from time to time but trust me you want the geckos as they eat all the other bugs that you might see and frankly, not care too much about. lol
Please don’t freak out or kill these creatures as they are a huge part of our bio diversity and delicate eco system. We do not kill them and we just have to gently move them when WE invade their space. Let me know as I will gladly come to your room to help!
IF you will, please take a couple minutes to read the post below, I think its an important read for those of you on the fence of living in nature with all of these beautiful and sometimes intimidating creatures. You might not love them but I promise they wont bother you if you leave them
To come to Costa Rica is to love the nature, ALL OF IT.
Nature needs insects.
Houses can’t be airtight and it would be silly to throw around insecticidal products all the time.
SO YES, you will sometimes see ants on your walls. Could be a spider or even a scorpion. If its the later, we will remove him and place him back into the jungle for you. 🙂
YES a frog may make a big poo on your terrace and YES, wasps will build a beginning of nest wherever they can.
There’s no point in putting less stars for “cleanliness” on your review as this is a part of the authentic Costa Rican experience!
Costa Rica has 5% of the worlds biodiversity so be ready to see a lot of it if that is what you are hoping to see! On the flip side of things, there is a very simple solution if these things do bother you that much: Visit countries where biodiversity has been exterminated… Unfortunately, there are a lot of them. Still beautiful places to visit with less critters running around your rooms.
It does seem that we are witnessing a change in the type of visitors lately in Costa Rica and it would be a shame if we lost the sense of Pura Vida and the love of this beautiful nature by focusing on a certain “STANDARDIZATION” accommodation desired by a certain type of traveller. We are not the typical hotel chain. We are ecologically friendly, as best that we can be. We still want you to have an extraordinary and authentic Costa Rican experience and we do our best to give that to you in a clean and mostly critter free cabins. Just know that it wont be completely bug free and that its ok to not be.
While some areas of the roads are now paved, the unpaved roads and tracks allow you to gain peace of mind. Do not want the “standard” amenities to arrive too quickly because we could lose more than we would gain.
The luxury in this country is above all to be able to observe a monkey from your terrace or to hear the silence only disturbed by the birds. Try to keep that in mind and make it one of the reasons for your stay here.
The luxury is to know that by visiting Costa Rica you participate in the preservation of a rather rare model that is unfortunately not many places like this, left in this world.
Another point :
YES also sometimes the power goes out or the internet jumps and YES sometimes you have to wait a bit before it comes back on. Not as much as it used to do but there are never any guarantees that it won’t. No need to harass your hosts after a 3-minute break… Instead, try to take the opportunity to look up at the trees and their inhabitants. You will see it relaxes and it allows you to put a lot of things into perspective. One of the reasons that we chose to move here. To slow down, put away the electronics, breathe in the cool coastal air and listen to the sounds of the quirky and lively jungle animals.
Pura Vida.
